On August 29th, 2024, our partner, Lia Rimondini from the Università del Piemonte Orientale showcased BIOACTION at the Precision Medicine: How Far Are We? event at the Center Rog in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The event, organized by the PREMUROSA project and Science on the Street (Slo: Znanost na cesti, ZnC), gathered experts for talks, hands-on demonstrations, and lively round table discussions on the newest research in precision medicine.
During the event, Lia showcased new and upcoming projects on precision medicine, including BIOACTION. She explained how our EU-funded project offers a unique solution: instead of fighting harmful bacteria, it aims to transform them into allies. Lia detailed how the project utilizes innovative hydrogels to reprogram bacterial biofilms, converting them into small factories that generate healing molecules. This approach is essential because traditional antibiotic treatments are losing effectiveness due to the rise of antimicrobial resistance.
This event was the perfect place to present BIOACTION. I got to share our unique approach to turning bacteria into allies with people who genuinely understand the challenges of precision medicine.

The roundtable discussions—joined by Lia, Bojana Obradović (Tehnološko metalurški Fakultet, Beograd), Michael Gasik (Aalto University), and Mauro Alini (AO Research Institute)—explored how to navigate the large amounts of data from studies on biomaterials and how they interact with diverse patients, for example, using machine learning. The round table session is available for viewing for those who couldn’t attend or want to revisit the engaging discussions.
By presenting BIOACTION’s innovative approach to a diverse audience of researchers and professionals, Lia opened the door for potential collaborations that could amplify the project’s impact on treating implant-associated infections.
