Beatrice Simonis, a researcher at CNR-ISB recently presented her work at the 9th International Electronic Conference on Medicinal Chemistry (ECMC 2023). Held online throughout November 2023, ECMC provides a platform for experts in medicinal chemistry to share their latest developments.
Beatrice’s presentation explored the potential of liposomes as highly customizable nanocarriers in drug delivery. Liposomes have unique features such as low toxicity and the ability to carry various bioactive molecules. Her work focuses on how different amphiphiles—water-loving and fat-loving compounds—can affect the physical and biological behavior of liposomes, changing how they interact with human cells.
Liposomes can be a very powerful tool in nanomedicine. Thanks to their unique characteristics, they can be easily and properly tuned by modulating the lipid composition, particularly their size, charge, and stability. With the right adjustments, liposomes could become better at crossing biological barriers, which could revolutionize drug delivery systems.
The research, co-authored by BIOACTION partners Francesca Ceccacci, Mariangela Clemente, Giovanna Mancini, and Cecilia Bombelli, provided valuable insights into developing efficient drug delivery systems and can be accessed in full in the following video.
The conference’s multidisciplinary scope—from small molecules to biomolecules and pharmaceutical preparations—made it an ideal venue to share these latest developments, learn from other experts, and stay on top of the latest research.
Being able to present our work at this esteemed event, where our research on stereochemistry and liposome behavior was recognized, is a huge milestone for us!
